Commencement Day Details

Graduate Ceremony Procedures

  • Plan to arrive at Western Hall approximately one hour prior to the ceremony.
  • Please leave personal items with family or friends. There is no secure location to leave items in the line-up area.
  • Pick up your name card in the East Arena (area east of the gym).
  • Be in line 30 minutes prior to the ceremony.
  • You will be led by a departmental representative and seated with other graduate degree candidates from your department. Tassel should be on the left side of your cap as you have already earned a bachelor's degree.

Graduate HoodDo not wear your hood as you will be hooded on stage. Folded lengthwise, drape the hood over your right arm so the top fold of the hood (the narrowest part) is outside, hanging away from your body. The velvet section and button should be closest to the bend of your arm – not your wrist. Please make sure your hood is unbuttoned. (See photo)

  • In order to show respect to all graduates and their guests, you are to refrain from performing any theatrics or celebrations on the stage.
  • Maintain professional demeanor in accordance with your graduate degree at all times during the ceremony.
  • When degree candidates are presented for graduation, you will be directed by the marshals to the stage in the order in which you are seated. Proceed onto the stage and hand your name card to the academic reader.
  • You will step forward to the hooding area and hand your hood to the hooding assistant.
  • Please stop at the designated spot. Keep facing forward, bend your knees, and lower your body straight down to make this process seamless. The hooding assistant will lift the hood over your head, resting it on your shoulders. They will adjust the velvet band and flip the satin lining to display school colors on your back.
  • Proceed across the stage to receive your diploma cover from your department chair/designee.
  • Your photo will be taken by the University photographer while you are receiving your diploma cover. Exit the stage.
  • Graduates are required to return to seating on the arena floor after crossing the stage and remain there until released by the marshals at the end of the ceremony.
